Living Legend (cont)
| George landed his first job in the movie industry
in 1934 when he became an illustrator for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
He became MGM's director of scenic art in 1938 and, eventually,
head of the scenic art department, a position he held until
his retirement in 1969 |
 |
| Leaving MGM meant a new career rather than retirement.
George had always painted the scenes around him and things
he saw on his travels even when he was very busy at MGM.
With "retirement" he
simply shifted into high gear. "An appreciation and love of nature are the
prime motivating influence on my painting. I react to and rely rather heavily
upon the appearance of things and happenings around me." |
