Living Legend
At 93 and still painting at a fabulous clip, artist
George Gibson certainly qualifies as a
Living Legend
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1904, George Gibson was educated
at Edinburgh College of Art and Glasgow School of Art where his
studies included theatre scenic art. Since it was becoming apparent
that the greatest theatre of them all was the movies, George made
his way to Southern California in 1930 to see what he could fine.
What he found was the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles.
This was the center for the group that was to become called the
California Scene Painters. In addition to working with artists
like Emil Kosa, Jr. Millard Sheets and Phil Dike, George also picked
up the school's enthusiasm for watercolor. The ability to paint
quickly and accurately, qualities that are required by this unforgiving
medium, probably didn't hurt George in his hunt for a job in Hollywood.
